WHERE: Hotel Playa Costa Verde, Playa Pesquero, Holguin, CUBA
WHEN: April 2015
HOW LONG FOR: 6 days

This trip was a little different for us because it was … dun dun duuuuuuuun…. an ALL INCLUSIVE PACKAGE TRIP. I feel like there is a bit of a stigma attached to this kind of holiday for people of our age group, but when you’re in the middle of your PhD sometimes you do just want to sit on a beach and do nothing! Whilst I did manage to have some well deserved relaxation time, reading a couple of books and listening to music, it was actually a much more action packed trip than we anticipated. Let me start with the beach, it was the MOST BEAUTIFUL beach I have EVER been to. The sand was brilliant white and powder soft. The sea was crystal clear with hardly any waves. The snorkelling was fantastic, we so many multicoloured fish, flat fish, sea caterpillars and sea urchins. My photos really don’t do it justice and I didn’t manage to catch the little fish with the most vibrant colours, but I’ll post them below anyway.

Even though the beach was beautiful and the snorkelling provided us with many hours of entertainment (and slightly sunburnt scalps – it was 38 degrees!), we decided to take a day to do one of the many excursions on offer. We chose an excursion called ‘Fantastica’, which involved an hour of horse-riding through the Cuban countryside, wandering around a zoo holding a tortoise, crocodile and parrot, swimming with dolphins and a three-course lunch at a farm. The day certainly lived up to its name – it was incredible. My one complaint, which I raised with the tour guide, was that the zoo we visited didn’t seem to be the most humane – the cages were quite small. The horses and dolphins, however, seemed perfectly happy. So even though it wasn’t like our other more traveller-type holidays, I had a wonderful time in Cuba! I’ve said in my previous posts that I’m happiest when I’m by the sea, so this was actually a pretty perfect place for me! Cuba is such a beautiful country. My only complaint was that it went too quickly!!! If I had stayed longer I would have loved to do some more excursions, maybe to a cigar factory or a ride in one of the beautiful classic cars.
p.s apologies for the poor quality of some of my photos – I didn’t take my big bulky camera with me!
